The current applicable standard AS/NZS 4287:1995 Child carrier seats for pedal bicycles – Safety requirements is not referenced by any legislation and therefore compliance is voluntary. The WeeRide Kangaroo does not comply with this standard as it specifically mentions rear mounted seats only.
The standard is overdue for review and it is hoped that the path the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the American Society for Test and Materials (ASTM) is taking will be followed by New Zealand. “A motion to initiate a standard for front mounted carriers was approved” by the ASTM Bicycle Subcommittee Meeting in September 2006.
For further assurance that the WeeRide Kangaroo is a suitable bicycle child seat please read the WeeRide Kangaroo Engineering Evaluation by Mitchell Engineering and Testing (US) Limited. The authors of this report sit on the ASTM Bicycle Subcommittee.
The maximum child weight the WeeRide Kangaroo can carry is 18kg. This is the weight of the average New Zealand 5 year old boy. The child’s height is more likely to be an issue sooner than weight. The WeeRide Kangaroo can fit a 1m tall average 3 1/2 year old New Zealand boy quite comfortably. Some children have been known to last significantly longer in the WeeRide Kangaroo.
The WeeRide Kangaroo seat comes with a unique Support Bar which can be attached to virtually any bike shape including ‘Y’ frame ladies bikes and full suspension mountain bikes.
The WeeRide Kangaroo is not suitable for racing style bikes with drop (curled) handlebars.
The standard supplied WeeRide Kangaroo will not fit bikes with a head-tube outside diameter of greater than 55mm. If your bike’s head-tube is greater than 55mm then longer manufacturer approved bolts can be substituted. Contact us for further information or visit your local WeeRide Kangaroo retailer. (Your bike’s handlebar stem slots into the head-tube which is where the front of the WeeRide Support Bar is attached).
The installed WeeRide Kangaroo STD weighs 3.2kg and the LTD weighs 3.5kg.
An adjustable spanner and a 5mm Allen (Hex) key wrench are the only tools required when installing the WeeRide Kangaroo.
The installation of the Support Bar (from head-tube to seat-post) takes around 20 minutes for the average unskilled person.
The WeeRide Kangaroo is quickly and easily secured to and removed from the Support Bar by way of a supplied Thumb Knob (butterfly bolt).
Extra Support Bars are available to enable the WeeRide Kangaroo to be easily swapped from one bike to another.
Your child can cycle with you on the WeeRide Kangaroo from 12 months old. At 12 months your child will have the neck strength to support their head while wearing a cycle helmet and riding along with you.
